There’s no better way to freshen up your space and add value to your home. But before you update your flooring, there are many choices to make. We’ve rounded up some flooring contractor FAQs in Everett / Bellingham to help you with your decision-making process. If you want more information, check out our web pages dedicated to different kinds of flooring.

No matter the flooring you choose, you can trust the qualified contractors hired by Footprints Floors to do the job right.

FAQs

The first thing to figure out when updating your flooring is what flooring is right for the space. For a bathroom or kitchen where there will be lots of moisture and potentially water on the floor, something like tile or vinyl flooring is ideal because it’s durable and water-resistant. Hardwood flooring is a classic choice for other areas of your home, but you still need to choose between solid or engineered hardwood. Consider the upkeep of different flooring and the wear — do you have young kids or pets? Does the room receive much sun? Answer these questions first to help you decide the kind of flooring that will suit your needs.

It depends! Laminate and vinyl flooring can be installed directly over existing flooring, and solid hardwood can be glued directly onto concrete. Consider factors like the age and condition of your existing flooring and whether it will serve as a sturdy base for new flooring.

Contrary to popular belief, it is not difficult to care for wood flooring. You can simply vacuum hardwood floors to remove grit and debris and use a damp cloth or mop to wipe away dust. To reduce potential scratches, ensure footwear (i.e., heels) has proper plastic caps to prevent scratches, or ask guests to remove their shoes. As a bonus, you can switch up the look of your hardwood floors at any time through staining or refinishing.

You probably bumped into three terms when looking up hardwood flooring online: "painting," "staining," and "refinishing." "Painting" is obvious, but what about the others? A wood stain, usually applied by hand, is used to darken the color of the wood. The "finishing" process involves applying varnish and a coating of sealant, which adds gloss and protects the wood. "Refinishing" is the process of redoing your current flooring finish, revitalizing, and rejuvenating it.

Refinishing or restoring existing wood floors can save you tons of money! If you have old wood flooring that doesn’t look great, it can be tempting to rip it out and start over. But wood flooring is resilient and made to last. Most damage can be repaired, and refinishing or restoring can make wood floors look new. If you’re unsure whether your wood flooring can be saved, the experts at Footprints Floors can assess it.

This is another “it depends” situation. Solid hardwood flooring is more expensive than engineered hardwood. However, solid hardwood can be sanded and refinished more than engineered hardwood, so it may last longer. Engineered hardwood is more affordable and is more resistant to moisture and humidity. If you live in a place with high humidity or greatly varying temperatures, engineered hardwood flooring may be the right choice. Both look beautiful and are easy to take care of.

Laminate flooring is a budget-friendly type of layered flooring that can be made to look like pretty much anything. It’s typically made up of wood fibers compressed into a board or a plywood board. The board is then covered in an “image” layer — basically, a photo of whatever you want the flooring to look like (stone, wood, etc), and a “wear” layer, or protective layer. Some laminate may also have a backing layer made of cork or felt. Laminate is an affordable way to get the look of more expensive wood or stone flooring. It’s pretty durable, making it a great choice for homes with pets or kids, and it’s easy to clean. However, prolonged exposure to water can cause the wood part of the laminate to warp, making it unsuitable for rooms like bathrooms.

Laminate’s wood component makes it susceptible to water damage. Vinyl is an entirely synthetic material, which means it’s waterproof. As long as laminate is installed correctly, it’s fairly water-resistant, but still probably not a suitable choice for bathrooms or mudrooms where water might linger. Vinyl is extremely durable and comes in various of colors, textures, and styles. Both laminate and vinyl are great choices for homes with high traffic from kids and pets, and they’re easy to take care of — but whereas vinyl can go in any room in your home, remember to keep laminate out of the bathroom.

There is a much wider variety of colors, textures, and designs in tile flooring than in hardwood. Tile floors have a lifespan of over a century. Whether you're looking for a traditional or modern look, there is a tile pattern to suit you. Regarding durability, aesthetics, maintenance, and cost, tile is an excellent choice. It's also considered one of the most eco-friendly options for flooring in your home.

Ceramic tiles are made up of clay or other minerals that have been tightly compressed and heated in an oven. They can be glazed or unglazed and come in a variety of colors, shapes and sizes. Porcelain tiles are ceramic tiles that have been heated at an even greater temperature, making them more durable and less porous. Porcelain tiles are better suited for rooms with high moisture content like bathrooms, but their durability makes them an excellent choice for any room. However, ceramic tile is more affordable and still offers great durability.

What Our Customers Say

Nate and his crew were professional, competent, reliable, and on time. Nate is an excellent communicator, and the install was a good value for the excellent quality of work done. We had him put in hard wood floors - white oak with a natural finish for our kitchen, powder room, and living room-which all turned out beautifully!!! As well as tile in our primary bathroom, hall bathroom, and utility room. We are beyond thrilled with the results. We would 100% recommend Nate and his Footprints Floors business for any flooring needs.

Nate and his team care about beautiful floors. They repaired and refinished our hickory hardwood as if it were their own . Footprints Floors are ultimate craftspeople!

First off, I am an Architect who is a bit hands-on when it comes to work in my own residence. I hired Footprints Flooring to replace failing sheet vinyl with new Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) in our laundry room and two bathrooms. I chose Footprints primarily because Owner Nate (himself) visited our house to prepare estimate; he is highly communicative and responsive (rare for contractors these days). Like myself, Nate is also detailed oriented and thoroughly covered demo, subfloor, LVT installation, transitions and schedule and was the only one who researched availability of the LVT we wanted before coming out to prepare estimate. Footprints' price was competitive and Nate was more than fair on charges for unforeseen subfloor overages. His installer David did a fantastic job, was polite, respectful and responsive to my comments - making sure his finish work met or exceeded my standards. We couldn't be happier with the finished result and their final clean up was thorough. I highly recommend Footprints Flooring.

Nate explained the process completely, provided a timely and competitive estimate, and worked with our schedule. We were kept informed of the progress of the project throughout. The entire team at Footprint floors were fantastic and they completed the job a day ahead of schedule. Our floors look fantastic and have been brought back to life! I would highly recommend Footprint Floors for your flooring needs and care!

It was great luck to meet Nate. Since I previously had experience working with floor painting specialists, I was preparing for long deadlines and rework. Nate did his work quickly and efficiently, showed up on time, and did everything as promised. Dealing with him left a pleasant aftertaste. I can confidently recommend it to friends.

Just had my floors redone by Footprints and was really impressed. I was nervous because we had water damage and was going from a dark cherry stain to a lighter color and loved how they turned out.
Jayme Haynes 08/10/23 — google
We were amazed at the wonderful job Nate and his crew did. Our soft wood floors had 30 years worth of scratches and scrapes. Our floors now look brand new! The quality of the workmanship was excellent, the workers were professional and the work was completed on time. Thank you!
Terry Annema 07/23/23 — google
We called Footprint Floors to install wood in place of the old carpet we currently had. We originally wanted to match existing wood in the house. Once the installers got here they realized that the new wood was not the same height as the already installed wood. We immediately spoke with our Sales rep, Nate and worked out a new plan to replace all the wood in the house. Nate and the Footprint floor installers were very professional, and responsive to the issues that arose, which always seems to happen with construction projects. We were very happy with the end results and would strongly recommend Nate and Footprint Floors.

I was so pleased during the remodel of my house to find original hardwood floors. Now, after repairs and refinishing from Footprints, the floor is my favorite part of the remodel. The kitchen and hallway to our bedroom did not have wood originally, but they've weaved in the new wood with the existing wood so well, it all looks original. Overall, Footprints far exceeded my expectations and I would recommend them to anyone.

Nate sanded and efficiently finished an old oak floor, fixed imperfections, so it looks beautiful. He used a special LED light to cure the oil finish. I was able to walk on the floor right away. I would highly recommend this company.

Having worked for general contractors in various capacities for over 42 years I had experiences with dozens of subcontractors. From these life experiences there are a number of attributes that seemed to be markers for firms that performed well. When it came time to have our 1990's hardwood floor refinished, I looked for a firm that showed these qualities. I was not disappointed finding Nate with Footprint Floors. He and his firm did an exceptional job in refinishing and patching our red oak floors. Specifically, Nate showed a genuine interest in or project, he kept his commitments, showed up on time for scheduled meetings and was a great communicator. In finding a floor color to match the intent of our interior designer, he provided multiple color options trying to hit the right shade and hue. When he was not satisfied with what we thought was a decent match he came up with a final sample that was spot on. When it came to scheduling his crew for the work he showed up to walk the job with me and his workers, then followed up and walked our project when completed to make sure it was up to his and our expectations. We have received multiple compliments on our floors since we remodeled. Based upon our experience, I would use Footprint Floors again and recommend his firm to others for their hardwood floor projects.
